So has life changed a lot for you lately, then?
Benedict: It makes me smile, not that I didn’t smile before. But it makes me giggle a bit, like an idiot … It’s a weird thing, isn’t it? Because people know me better than I know them now. That has changed things. That makes for a very strange first encounter sort of dynamic, if you know what I mean. I can’t be churlish about it. It’s incredibly flattering. I want to do something useful with it, rather than just sort of feel smug about it. It’s a lovely position to be in, and it’s off the back of work that’s been really, really celebrated. It’s kind of a perfectly fitting, odd irony that the house that they find to settle in is an abandoned church.
It’s a single story, with three former offices turned bedrooms in the back, and creaky wooden floors that run throughout. It’s not a sprawling place, but there’s a full bathroom with a shower and the spots in the front room that once held wooden pews now feature a couch, a table, a stove, and a fridge. It’s simple almost to the point of sparse, but it’s all they need for now. They hunt often; there’s never any shortage of monsters, ghosts, and demons scattered across the states. But they have a base now…a home.
And after awhile, they make additions that really mark it as theirs. Dean builds a small garage and workshop alongside the house for the Impala. The third bedroom has been unused since they bought the place, so Sam takes it over; he paints a devil’s trap on the floor, drags in another table, lines the walls with bookshelves, and then fills them with their collection of research and books. Castiel starts an unusual little herb garden outside. Acacia, devil’s shoestring, and whatever other ritual handy plants he can get to flourish, and he seems to have a knack for it.
Just knowing that they have this place to come home to is enough to instill a kind of peace in Dean that he hasn’t known in what feels like forever. There’s a place to hole up when they have stretches of free days. It’s somewhere to grill steaks on a summer night while they share some beers. They stumble in after hunts and he has his own bed to fall into, and Cas by his side.
He and Cas never really had the big revealing talk about things. They finally just let it happen, this thing between them that they’ve been moving towards the whole time. A couple of weeks before getting this place, Sam had come back to their last motel room to find Dean and Castiel wrapped around each other. Nothing eye scarring, just holding each other, but Dean froze, breath catching with panic, not sure what would happen now. But Sam simply smiled, just looking relieved, and later that morning he suggested they look into getting a house.
And now they have this place and as Dean sits on the couch one morning, he marvels at this domestic life that he never could have pictured. Domestic as two hunters and a fallen angel can be whilst still hunting down all the evil in the world. But it’s working. And it’s home.
